History of Seattle’s Flag

Design from Resolution 28207, the symbol of the Goodwill Games with the Seattle of Seattle and the words "City of Goodwill Seattle"

The City of Goodwill

When hosting the Goodwill Games, a 1990 Olympic-like competition, the City Council declared Seattle the “City of Goodwill” and adopted an official city flag. The Resolution, 28207, reaffirmed “the City’s belief that the future well-being, if not survival of all citizens, is dependent upon our recognition of common bonds and shared responsibilities;”

The Flag’s Design

The flag adopted by the City in 1990 combines both the Seal of Seattle and the symbol of the Seattle Goodwill Games. With the support of City Council President Paul Kraabel, Architect David Wright developed the flag design. The symbol of the 1990 Goodwill Games was used throughout the competition, but the symbol fell into the public domain after the Games. Below you’ll find the trademark for the Goodwill Symbol in the public domain.
